The Mahadev Desai Public School is envisaged as a memorial of the great Mahadev Desai who was a personal secretary of Mahatma Gandhi for 25 years. Mahadev Desai was born on January 1, 1892, in Saras, a village in the Surat district of the Gujarat state Mahadev was brought up by his father, a school teacher and the principal of the local school, who had a great influence on him as he developed an interest in mathematics, literature, and Indian epics by his father. However, Mahadev faced some initial childhood tragedy – he lost his mother at a young age – he was brilliant and studied at Elphinstone College where he completed his degree in 1910 and after that, he completed his LLB in 1913. Desai’s life changed and fell into an evolutionary stage when he was employed by Gandhi in 1917 as a secretary. He also participated in the important events of the country such as the Champaran and Bardoli Satyagrahas and was the editor of many important journals like Navajivan and Harijan. His writings and translations comprise works of Gandhian philosophy and the freedom fight of India that show his sincere scholarship.
