Loreto House School

Loreto in India is traced back to the visit of Dr. Bakhaus to Loreto Abbey, Rathfarnham, Ireland in 1840. He asked Mother Teresa Ball to come and send sisters that would open a school for Catholic children in Calcutta. In answer to this request, Mother Teresa Ball sent seven sisters of Loreto and five postulants aged under 30 years, headed by Delphine Hart. The early sisters of mercy, include; Mother Delphine hart, mother Teresa Mons, mother Martina McCann, sister Alexia Egan, benigna Egan, Veronica fox, Gabriel Doyle, Miss Isabella Hart sister of Mother Delphine, Miss McDonough who later became sister Xaveria, Miss Shanley and Miss fitzpatrick. They embarked on the vessel by the name The Scotia and left Dublin on September 1, 1841 and arrived at Babughat, Kolkata, on December 29 1841. This group was the first congregation to come to North India. In the morning of the same day they reached here, a reception meeting was held at this Church; it was followed by a religious service at the Cathedral Church of Portuguese Church Street; here began the great educational work of Loreto in India.
