Teachers and school staff need to be trained in recognizing and dealing with gender bias in a classroom. They must prevent reinforcing gender stereotypes and facilitate boys and girls equally taking leadership in group projects and opportunities of participation in the same activities regarding STEM. Schools can engage with parents to establish a setting that recognizes and encourages this truth. A school that can accommodate flexible schedules, offers after-school programs, and makes resources available to manage family commitments alleviates some pressure on females and enables them to remain more focused in class.
Ultimately, inspiring girls to pursue STEM careers involves making the exciting and rewarding opportunities these fields provide clear and evident. Schools can contribute to this by offering internships, job shadowing, and experience in the wide variety of careers that exist within STEM fields. Bringing in professionals from many different industries to speak about their careers helps paint a realistic and inspiring picture of the potential that exists within STEM.
The gender gap in STEM is a persistent challenge, but it is not insurmountable. We play a very important role as parents by supporting our daughters' interest in STEM: we advocate for gender equality in education, encourage our girls to take risks, and foster an environment that values diversity and inclusion. Together with schools, a future wherein women are as aptly represented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in the pursuit of groundbreaking innovation and inspiring later generations might be created.
By removing the barriers that keep girls from pursuing STEM education and careers, we are closing the gender gap while also ensuring that our daughters have the same opportunities and rewards as their male counterparts.
